Muddy Church at St Mary’s – Caring for Creation Together
Last Sunday (17th Aug) marked a special milestone for St Mary’s – our very first Muddy Church!
At Striders, our children’s group, we’ve been learning all about God’s wonderful creation and what it means to be faithful custodians of the world around us. As Genesis reminds us, humanity is called not to exploit, but to tend, nurture, and cherish the earth. And what better way to live that out than by stepping outside to worship alongside nature itself?
Our first Muddy Church was full of activity and joy. Together we:
Began building a bug hotel, providing shelter for some of the smallest but most important creatures in our ecosystem.
Dug and planted a bog garden, creating a new habitat for wetland-loving plants and wildlife.
Planted fragrant lavender, a gift for the bees and other pollinators that bring such life and colour to our world.
Followed a wildlife trail around the churchyard, taking time to notice and give thanks for the life all around us.
Of course, this is only the beginning. Our Muddy Church is a journey – one that combines worship, community, and practical care for creation. There is still much more to do, and we’d love for you to be part of it.
Why not join us this Sunday (24th Aug) at 10am? Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a curious child, or someone who simply enjoys being outside in the fresh air. We’ll provide the tools and the refreshments – you just need to bring your enthusiasm (and perhaps some wellies!).
And if the weather isn’t kind? We’ll be ready in the potting shed, so the adventure continues whatever the skies bring.
Come and discover Muddy Church with us – worship with muddy boots, muddy hands, and grateful hearts. 🌿🙏
