VE Day 80th Celebration at St Mary’s, Sholing

St Mary’s Church in Sholing recently hosted a heartfelt VE Day 80th anniversary celebration during our Thursday Cuppa gathering on 15th May 2025. The event brought together members of the community to honour the sacrifices made during the Second World War and to celebrate the peace that followed.

Guests enjoyed a delicious commemorative cake, kindly made by Sheila, adding a sweet touch to the occasion. Brian shared a poignant poem written specially for the day, offering a moment of reflection that resonated with many.

A real highlight of the morning was a spirited sing-along, where everyone joined in with wartime classics such as We’ll Meet Again, The White Cliffs of Dover, and Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag. The songs, once sung to lift the spirits of a nation, brought smiles and a strong sense of shared heritage to the room. You can catch a clip of the sing-along here on Facebook.

The celebration was part of a wider series of events across Southampton and the UK, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. Across the country, communities took part in parties, beacon lightings, and special services to commemorate this important milestone.

St Mary’s Church continues to be a place where people can come together in community, remembrance, and joy. Our Thursday Cuppa remains a welcoming space for all – do join us sometime!
