Pew News - 12 Oct 2025

On Monday 6th October, the church commemorated William Tyndale, who had been burnt at the stake in 1536.  His crime?  Heresy!  He wanted the people of England to be able to read the Bible in their own language – so they could learn about, and develop a personal relationship, with God.  William’s work met with resistance from the Bishop of London.  William fled and never returned to England – but he did continue his work.  When the first copies arrived in England in 1526 the Bible was deemed as subversive by the church authorities.  However, others completed his work, and the first Authorised Version of the Bible was commissioned by King James 1st and was published in 1611.

We take it for granted that we can own and read a Bible of our choice.  We are so fortunate – there are many Christians who cannot get hold of a Bible in their own language.  If you don’t have a Bible, and you would like to have one at home – or on your phone - please let us know.
