Heritage 160 update March 2026

Following the award of a substantial grant from the National Lottery, we have been able to proceed with our Heritage 160 project which has been planned for many years. This transformative project includes the remodelling of the western end of the Church to create an accessible WC and kitchenette, together with the full replacement of the Church’s heating system. The architects, and mechanical and electrical engineer’s designs were completed in the autumn 2025.

The first phase of works is now complete, including the safe removal of the asbestos-coated boiler. Tenders for the second phase, covering the main construction works, were received just before Christmas. Although competitive, the prices were higher than our budget. We have therefore shortlisted the three most competitive tendering contractors, who are currently reviewing potential cost savings. Once a contractor is appointed, we expect work to begin within a few weeks.

Alongside the physical works, as part of our Heritage 160 project, our research into St Mary’s historic connections with the local community has been rewarding and enlightening. This includes links to the Traveller community, crew members from the Titanic, veterans and casualties of both World Wars, and many personal stories generously shared by local residents. These findings will be available for viewing within the Church as well as our own resource database that will continue to develop in the years ahead.

The Heritage 160 project will culminate in the celebration of the 160th Anniversary of St Mary’s Church this autumn. Your continued generosity and support are vital in helping us to deliver this exciting project – one that will benefit our whole community for years to come.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of our project, I would be very happy to hear from you. Thank you for being part of this journey.
